2016: The Highlights
Well, we made it. Man, is it good to be on the other side of 2016. But as much as 2016 was a burning dumpster fire of a year, it brought a lot of good things to me.
There were bumpy rides in the back of safari jeeps under the stars, summer nights screaming along to concerts with my best friends, and a whole lot of silly moments. I sweated bullets on 100-degree days in Moab and shivered through Alaskan cold fronts. Worked my butt off and binge-watched Netflix (can Stranger Things be a 2016 highlight?). Mostly, though, I did what I had set out to do on last New Years- I surprised myself, and tried to let things unfold without too much concern for fact that I have no idea what I’m doing. It’s working out pretty well so far.
My New Years plans were sideswiped by the insanity of coordinating a very last minute cross-country move to Alaska. I wasn’t where I had planned to be to ring in 2017, but in the end the night had the makings of every good New Years celebration: champagne, near-misses with setting things on fire, and watching your parents discover the joys of doing shot skis. Well, maybe not so much that last one.
Any year that kicks off with 21 inches of predicted snowfall and a hastily planned road trip is alright with me. Happy 2017!
