5 Up and Coming Travel Sites to Watch
I don’t know about you, but I spend a disproportionate amount of my time browsing travel blogs, googling far off locations, and planning trips that, lets face it, won’t be happening in the foreseeable future. I can’t help it. But thanks to all those listless hours spent drooling on my keyboard over other people’s adventures, I’ve stumbled onto some pretty cool travel sites- all of which are dedicated to bringing beauty and personality back into travel reviews.
Triptease is working towards giving the “dull, anonymous text reviews” that dominate the travel review world a makeover. Amen. The site makes it easy to connect with other nomads and travel junkies and share your experiences the way they should be shared- with stunning photos in center stage and personal, quirky travel tales to accompany them. And it’s as easy as it is addictive. I’ve written a couple reviews, including this one on a hotel in Lombok, Indonesia.
Self-designated, 12hrs lies “somewhere between the backpackers and the luxury hotels.” Their 12 hour, succinct, gorgeous guides to cities from Copenhagen to Portland will make you wish you were travelling right alongside them. They leave out the obvious tourist hotspots in favor of the best food, sights, shopping, and experiences that you could pack into 12 short hours.
Although it’s not released until *fingers crossed* later this summer, Maptia is on a mission to create “the most inspirational map in the world.” They’re getting the word around with the travel manifesto they created and asked the world to sign. Reserve your spot to watch this awesome startup launch here.
Passion Passport is unique in that it not only provides inspiration for your travel adventures, but wants to fund them as well. The site sells photographs by travel photographers in order to finance their Bucket List Initiative- a project that grants one lucky winner $1000 or more to make their wildest travel dream a reality. They’ll soon be accepting applications for the third round here, so keep an eye out!
Okay, not technically “Up and Coming.” It’s been around since 2009, but it’s new to me. Jetsetter offers you deals on covet-worthy hotels and destinations, each verified to meet Jetsetter standards by their 200 correspondents across the globe. My personal object of obsession? A nine-day rafting adventure in Patagonia on the Futaleufu river- luxury camping included.
